Nelson Mandela Day was launched on the great statesman’s birthday (18 July) in 2009 as a call to action for individuals everywhere to take responsibility for making the world a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did for more than 67 years.
To celebrate this Nelson Mandela Day, all that is required is an action that helps change people’s lives for the better. Lodox, in partnership with Thelle Mogoerane Hospital, acted to better the lives of needy families in Kathorus.
Before we drove off with a bakkie full of groceries, blankets and clothes to donate to seven families in the informal settlement, we spent some time in the maternity ward handing out baby clothes to all mothers who had given birth that day. It was a special moment to see the appreciation on the mothers’ faces. A bag full of newborn clothes was left with the nurses at the maternity ward, for those babies yet to be born.
Each needy family in Kathorus has a rehabilitation patient at the hospital and were identified as under-privileged by social workers. We drove off with hospital management to the community to hand over the donation bags (containing blankets, groceries, clothes, shoes and toys) to the families.
We at Lodox have come to realize that we cannot operate in isolation from the community, and that social involvement goes beyond the work we do in our office and workshop.
“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
- Nelson Mandela
